En une quinzaine d’années et une poignée de films électrisants, tels «Good Time» et «Uncut Gems», Benny et Josh Safdie se sont imposés comme les nouveaux fers de lance du cinéma indépendant newyorkais. Si ce binôme fusionnel a récemment choisi de poursuivre sa route séparément, les deux frères semblent emprunter des voies relativement proches. Cette année, ils œuvrent en effet tous deux dans le genre révélateur du biopic sportif. Avant que Josh ne métamorphose Timothée Chalamet en champion de ping-pong dans «Marty Supreme», Benny fait de Dwayne Johnson un combattant de MMA. L’ancien catcheur, qui s’était quelque peu égaré à Hollywood, prête avec talent ses traits à Mark Kerr, dit «The Smashing Machine», star du combat libre, brisée par ses addictions. Dans la lignée de «The Wrestler» de Darren Aronofsky, il opère un véritable retour en grâce dans ce «rise and fall» («grandeur et décadence») très remuant.
